Wusasa is a town just outside the major city of Zaria, the seat of the ancient Zazzau emirate, in Kaduna State in Northern Nigeria. Kaduna State is home to an estimated 6 million people.
Wusa was originally known as Wusa-Wusa by the indigenous community but Christian missionaries converted the name to Wusa because they couldn’t pronounce it.
Zaria city is served by road and rail and by an airport just to the northwest. Zaria is the educational centre of the northern states. Located at Samaru, 7 miles (11 km) west-northwest, is Ahmadu Bello University (1962), with its associated institutes of education, economic and social studies, administration, and health.
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is the largest university in Nigeria and second largest in Africa, second only to Cairo University, Egypt. It is situated in Zaria. It was founded on October 4, 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria. Ahmadu Bello University operates two main campuses, Samaru and Kongo campus.
The first Northern Nigerian medical doctor, I. B. Dikko, was trained in Wusasa. Late Professor Ishaya Audu, Malam Zakari, late Malam John Tafida, Rhoda Mohammed, the first woman Nigeria’s ambassador to United Nations, General Yakubu Gowon, former head of state and quite a number of other prominent Nigerians have their roots at Wusasa.
Among the many historical landmarks in Wusasa is Wusasa College, the oldest Anglican theological establishment in Northern Nigeria.
